About

Biketerra is an independent 3D indoor cycling platform. Starting in 2023, Biketerra lets cyclists ride real-world routes with accurate physics, real terrain, and the freedom to create and upload their own routes.

Matt

I'm a Virginia-based software developer and cyclist. Biketerra started as a way to "scratch my own itch". I wanted to ride my local routes indoors, with accurate terrain, realistic physics, and minimal gamification.

How Biketerra is different

We built Biketerra from the ground up with a huge focus on terrain and physics accuracy.

All of Biketerra's terrain is sourced from real-world data. Our physics model is based on research studies and simulations. There are intentionally no power-ups, aero boosts, "premium bikes" or other gamification.

Biketerra's Discord has been active for years, and we're grateful to have a community that's friendly, supportive, and respectful. Many of Biketerra's best features have been a result of community feedback and discussion.

Biketerra was founded in 2023; our codebase had been battle-tested long before the age of vibe coding. That said, AI is merely a tool – and a very powerful one when managed carefully. It has helped us in planning numerous features, and has greatly expanded our test suite.

Biketerra very much stands on the shoulders of giants. We couldn't have built this without the open source JS ecosystem, including Node.js, Sveltekit, OpenStreetMap, Three.js, Socket.io, Tauri and others.

RGT was a big early inspiration for us, with its realistic physics and Magic Roads feature. Zwift did a great job bringing indoor cycling to the masses 🙌
